The Outer banks of North Carolina is a spectacular place to find a variety of birds, from the majestic Bald eagle to the tiny Ruby-throated hummingbird. Dare County has a lot to offer! In fact, 427 species of bird have been documented in the County (Ebird Dec 2019)! The variety of habitats, its position in the eastern migratory flyway, and the geography of the county is very attractive to many species of bird. Over the course of a day, you can bird Pocosin swamps, sand dunes, agricultural fields, freshwater marshes, tidal saltwater marshes, maritime forests, and beautiful beaches— observing 100 species in a day is possible under good conditions. I would love to show you some of the amazing birds and other natural wonders the area has to offer!

Jonathan was a great birding tour guide and we had a wonderful time. My husband and I decided to find a last-minute tour, and even though Jonathan was not scheduled to do a tour he was nice enough to open up his schedule for us. My husband and I are experienced birders but new to the area, so we wanted to do a tour and Jonathan was extremely knowledgeable about the birds, the area and the best places to bird. My husband enjoys photography and Jonathon was very knowledgeable about which sites would have the best lighting throughout the morning. We got some great shots. We were very impressed. Even though we had only scheduled for a half day he was nice enough to take us to an additional location that afternoon. It was awesome since we could see a few more species with his powerful scope before the end of the day. He also gave us good advice on where to eat and other birding sites we should check out. An added bonus was that he knew all the local birders in the area and introduced us when we ran into them. Over the next few days we ran into all those local birders who also took us under their wing thanks to Jonathan introducing us. He helped us find almost all the birds on our "birding wish list" for the trip. He definitely helped us find all of the reasonable birds from our wish list since it is not his fault the Steller's Sea Eagle didn't show up that day 🙂

Absolutely wonderful morning! We loved starting at Bodie LIghthouse. We saw and heard many birds. Pea Island was great as well. My favorite new bird viewed was the pair of Tricolor Herons. Beautiful! Jonathon is so knowledgeable. Don't miss a chance to do this trip!

Had a wonderful half day guided birding tour with Jonathan around Pea Island. He designs the tour around your interests. I was able to add many birds to my year list as well as a few to my life list. Highly recommend.

When a local guide recommends a competing tour company, you know you're going to get something great. And we did, no question. Jonathan took us on a private birding tour, identifying birds by sound and by sight that we had completely missed when visiting the same locations by ourselves. He brought a scope to help us see more clearly the birds in the pond and on the wing--and amazed us with his ability to spot and identify birds which looked to us like tiny dots in the distance, even with binoculars. Jonathan is an integral member of the local birding community, so had heard about--and took us to see--rare birds that were passing through and reported by others. He is patient and generous with beginners (like me), explaining and identifying birds and plants too; and judging by the warm greetings from other binocular-wearing folk, he is well regarded by birders of all levels. We would absolutely take another tour with Jonathan, birding or kayaking or other. On this last trip we lucked out to find him and were excited that he could squeeze us in on short notice. But next time we won't take that chance. We will definitely book ahead with Native Birding Tours to be sure we can get the benefit of Jonathan's expertise and the pleasure of his company! Highly recommend!
